Are you looking to do a bit of home baking yourself? Want to know my top tips on where to start? Then look no further! Here are my top tips to bake yourself that perfect homemade cake!
1. My first top tip would be to make sure you have plenty of time. I know it sounds like a silly thing to say but some people don't realise how much time can go into cake baking! Make sure that you allow yourself plenty of time (such as an afternoon off, not just a morning before you're meeting friends for lunch!) so that you don't feel rushed.
2. Find yourself a good recipe. Although it is good to follow the recipe, I would use it more as a guideline. Don't be scared to change around some flavours or ingredients (for example getting a basic sponge recipe but mixing in a bit of lemon to make a lemon sponge!) Cake baking is all about experimenting with flavours!
3. Preparation. Always make sure that you are prepared before you make your cake. Making sure that you have all of your ingredients prepared (it makes sense to do this but there have been many times where I have had to run out to the shops mid bake as I have run out of butter!) Be extra prepared to make sure that you have all of your decoration ingredients ready (such as fondant icing or decorations you may be adding) as these can be more difficult to get hold of and can be pretty time consuming!
4. Make use of any electrical mixers you have. Obviously this isn't essential, but I would definitely recommend using one if you have one! (My life has become so much easier since having my KitchenAid!) They make a perfect smooth batter everytime..after all, who would want lumps in their cake?!
